John Skelton (1925 - ) was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland. He studied in Queen's University, Belfast, and later in St Martin's College of Art in London. Returning to Ireland, he worked as an illustrator, designer and art teacher. He specialises in the landscapes and seascapes of the West of Ireland. His work is in the great tradition of Irish landscape, exemplified by Walter Osborne, Paul Henry and later Jack B.Yeats.
John Skelton combines the Impressionists' delight in colour and movement with the academician's insistence on draughtsmanship and careful observation.
His work appears in many important private and public collections in Ireland, north and south, and all over the world.
