Robert Ryan was born in Limerick and graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1987. He continued to work in London and Copenhagen and returned to settle in his home of historic Lough Gur, County Limerick in 1994.
Finding inspiration in his environment and the diverse eco-systems around the world, Robert has travelled extensively in Europe, Africa, Asia, America, and most recently Australia. He uses this time to study how we see ourselves and interact with other evolutionary groups. This is then interpreted by the way animals interact with environments and space on his canvases.
“I sometimes work till the break of dawn. The hours of darkness, silence and stillness almost feel timeless and infinite. My images are of a darkened empty place where creatures, as if in limbo, wander aimlessly in isolation, like lost souls.”
Robert has shown in many major annual exhibitions including An Oireachtais, RHA, RUA, Iontas, EVA and Eigshe. He has also exhibited in several countries abroad and has work in many public and private art collections.
